Blog Post #1: Jumping in with Both Feet!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Laura McKenna, and I’m the new communications intern at the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre. Quite frankly, I don’t know much about turtles. I know they have shells, and I know they are cute little creatures that need our help. My knowledge pretty much ends there. Or at least it did until I got involved with the KTTC.

So why am I here, and what am I doing? Well, I’m a graduating Public Relations student from Durham College. In our final year, we are required to complete a weekly placement at a not-for-profit organization. When I heard about the KTTC from a friend, I jumped at the opportunity to work there for my placement.

Like I said, I don’t know much about turtles, but I am so excited to learn. And I’m hoping you will follow along and learn with me. I plan on keeping everyone up-to-date on my journey, and giving you the inside scoop on what’s happening at the KTTC.

So let’s begin…

As I’m starting out on my placement, there are so many great things happening at the KTTC. I’m sure by now most of you have heard the turtles are getting a new home. And are they ever excited!

In the time leading up to my placement, I had the opportunity to visit the old location. The industrial building served its purpose, but the turtles had clearly outgrown the space. It was time for bigger and better things.

Which brings us to the new location. I visited the turtle’s new home for the first time last week, and couldn’t believe how great it was! I even found an old Turtle’s chocolate container outside the entrance so clearly it was meant to be.

Inside things are still a little chaotic, but progressing quickly. The turtles are all moved in, equipment is being set up and Paddy’s new home in the education centre is almost complete.

Within no time the centre will be all set up, and you’ll be able to see things for yourself. Until then, check out my weekly updates to learn as I learn, and get the inside scoop on the KTTC.
